Why so Short?

Games today are getting shorter and shorter, making up for this is the graphics behind them, or atleast that is what the companies think. I was deaply offended when I looked at GameSpot's rating of Halo 3 (9.5/10) compared to Super Mario 64 (9.4). Halo can be beaten easily in one day, however, it took me weeks to beat Mario 64. Super Mario had more Game play than all 3 Halos together, and if it were to have a Multiplayer it would have kicked the ass out of Halo 3. Why is Halo 3 so fucking overrated?
The length of a game doesn't necessarily denote the quality of a game. One of my very very favorite games in the past 15 years s Portal, an can beat that in an hour. With how picky my taste for gameplay is, there were parts in Mario Galaxy that were unbearably aweful for me to play, and I know, I Know, that a company like Nintendo that is supposedly supposed to be one of the best in gameplay design, only left those things in there for the sake of extending time for people that demand long games. But I'd much rather play a perfect short game than a long game filled with filler content and repetative grind. I think it's a little short-sighted to judge a game's quality by its length.
